[Printable version] Saint George Cathedral was founded in 1021 and was finished in 1053. It was blessed in the honour of Saint George – the patron of King Yaroslav the Wise. It stood on the corner of Striletska (at that time – Saint George) and Zolotovoritska streets. In 17th century on its ruins a small wooden church was erected, in 18th century – a stone one. It didn’t survive until now.
The church is also memorable because in 1816 the Lord of Valachy and Moldova Konstantinos Ypsilanti was buried here. He took part in Greek Liberty forces against the Turkish rule. After the suppression of the rebellion he had to emigrate to Russian Empire and found his final stop in Kiev, in Pechersk not far from Military Nicholas cathedral, where Eternal Honour square today is.
